Our AC Ace Donor Car
This is an AC 2 Litre. Ours has the AC Ace development engine in it as depicted by the 'D' for development on the engine number. It is thought (Marque Expert & 2 Litre Engine Expert & Author on the subject) that the engine was used in the development of the shell bearings for the AC Ace. Our engine is one of the 9 consecutive numbers that are missing in the AC Records. It is a really great find.
Could our car be a 2 Litre AC ACE Development car? Who knows? If anyone has any information on the history of this car please get in touch. In any event, the chassis and engine numbers don't match on our car due to the 'D' engine so we will sell the whole car, rolling chassis, body, interior. We'll retain the engine, gearbox, differential and radiator for our re-creation as we want an AC engined Ace variant.
If you are interested in buying the whole car please get in touch? I have heard there are some spare 2 litre engines out there but if you could find the original engine of his car you would need UMB-1688W. The chances of this engine being around are slim.
There is a chap in Belgium that has a glass fibre body for an AC Ace for sale here. He also had a 2 Litre for sale to use as a donor for an ACE re-creation build. It maybe sold now but worth asking.
We picked the car up in Ireland and brought it back on a trailer. Southern Ireland from Kent can be done in 24 hours but be prepared to be tired at the end of it. The full cost and fuel plus a few bits ran up a bill of £785 to transport the AC home. There are firms that will do this for you but be prepared to spend quite a bit more.

In Transit
This was a 15ft trailer and not quite long enough. Ifor Williams make a 17ft trailer but rare you can hire one of those. Trailer hire for the two days was £85. On the ferry we could not get a cabin on the way over and had a club class seat and blanket. If you can get a cabin on the way over do so. We went with Irish Ferries.
The strip down
It took 6 hours to remove the engine and gearbox and associated linkages. the pedal linkage was also removed. Here are a few pictures of the strip down. We are fortunate to have a block and tackle in the roof joists and a car lift. Makes the job so much easier. As a rough guide, to take the engine and box out of a 2 Litre AC you have to:
1: Remove bonnet
2: Disconnect Battery 3: Drain Radiator 4: Remove grille 5: Remove front cowl 6: Remove Radiator 7: Remove exhaust manifold 8: Remove dynamo |
9: Unhook throttle linkage
10: Disconnect the distributor cap and coil cables. 11: Remove the 2 gearbox retaining bolts 12: Unhook the Throttle pedal attached to gearbox 13: Disconnect propshaft 14: Lift engine whilst pulling forwards at the same time so the bottom of the engine clears the front chassis. 15: Engine and box will come out as one item |
