Our AC Ace Moss Gearbox
Below, you can see the gearbox that will go in to our Hawk AC Ace. It is a Moss Box that we intend to fit an overdrive to. Scroll downto see more on our gearbox and a video or two.
A Moss box residing at Hawk Cars
Note the gear stick position at the rear of the box. This AC Angine and gearbox are for sale from Gerry Hawk at £1500
Our AC (Moss) GearboxThe video on the right shows the gearbox seperating from our AC engine. Really simple job after draing the oil out. This box will now go off for refurb and have the overdrive added. Once back it will be mated to the engine so we can then get the chassis bracketed. On initial inpsection it looks pretty good lthough reverse is not playing ball for some reason. We'll find out!. Pictures below can be clicked on to get a bigger picture.

Gearbox and overdrive
We are not sure of this overdrive will fit???? It doesn't, but no matter as we are using it as an exchange unit for one that does. The one that does fit comes out of a jaguar! Total cost for the gearbox rebuild and the overdrive overhaul and exchange will be in the region of £2000 from Overdrive Repair Services.

Shipping for repair
Our gearbox and overdrive are off to Overdrive Repair Services. The easiest way to get them up there is on a pallet. The cost for this is £72. All oil has to be drained from the box and it is best that you wrap them up so any residual oil does not leak in transit. May sound obvious but the pallet folk tell me leaking gearbox are common:-)

Our gearbox already to go to Overdrive Repair Services
Gearbox PDFBelow is a downloadable pdf. It has a few pictures of our gearbox and exchange overdrive unit. These pictures were used to have an 'Over-the-phone' conversation with Overdrive Repair Services. as it helps the conversation and identify the units as well as the likelihood of the repairs taking place.
As this is being written in March 2017 we await the return of the chrome gearbox shifter/stick. The gearbox repairs, overhaul and overdrive will take around 12 weeks to be returned to us. In the meantime I'll be cracking on with all of the other small jobs that can be done. It is hopeful that by early April the engine will be in for rebuild so the gearbox and engine should be reunited in July. Once we have them, we can bracket the chassis and the build should really get going.

The fully restored AC Gearbox and Overdrive
Below you can see how the gearbox was packaged for return. It has a small wooden cradle in the cardboard box all screwed to the pallet.
AC ACE Gear Stick
At this time we are not clear what would be the best stick to use for our AC ACE but we have gut feel it will be the Austin Healey stick. It is identical to the original AC Ace. We have 2 others. One from an early MG - a TA or TF as far as we can tell? We also have the original AC 2 litre stick that is very long and probably won't fit correctly when in the car. Picture below shows the Healey and the MG sticks we have on standby.
