AC ACE Starter Motor
Below you can see pictures of the original AC ACE starter motor. Plan is to have this refurbished. I use Broadway Electrical Services based Grays, Essex. Broadway have many exchange units in stock and have many of the vintage parts to hand to refurb your starter motor to concourse standard. Our starter motor threw up a few interesting anomalies that Broadway got to the bottom of and sorted out. Pictures of the refurb and issues below. Visit Broadway Electrical. Rob is the man with all the knowledge and Simon will look after you. They are great guys and it is always worth having a conversation with them.
The starter motor out of our AC 2 Litre
Interesting to note that the build dates of our starter motor are November 1955. We know that the original engine in our 2 litre was swapped over at AC at some point and the works development engine was probably put in the car as it was an engine on the shelf. The starter motor points to the fact that this swap over probably happened in 1955/early 1956 using the UMB engine we have. The Ac Ace was 2 years in to production in November 1955 so the story is stacking up.
Anomalies with our starter motor
The rubber in these early Lucas starter motors is prone to slipping and failing. This causes the starter motor to be less effective. It is guaranteed that it will fail at some point in the future. On inspection inside our starter motor it is evident it has been altered to make it more reliable by shortening the shaft to fit a later Lucas spring. You can see the welds in the picture below. As the welds have not failed in the whole history the car we are going to refurbish the starter motor as it is as the modification seems to be sensible.
