MGB Rear Axel -For the Hawk AC ACE Replica
The Hawk AC ACE replica is built on MGB running gear. Here is a gallery of our axel as we have stripped down. Pictures are taken as a record so that when we rebuild elements we can remember where everything went. You'll notice we checked out our original AC ACE 48 Spoke wheels on the splined hubs and they fit well. No issues there. I managed to get an additional FREE axel and the half shafts were better. So the finished rebuilt axel is an exchange unit from the MGOC Spares, Half shafts from the FREE axel. The back plates, drums and hubs all came from our donor axel and all bearings, seals and brake parts are new pattern parts. I've restored what I could. The half shafts came up very well.

The 2 near axels were mine. The half shafts came out of the rustier of the two which is the wire wheel axel. Picture taken at MGOC Spares in Cambridgeshire

Ours is in good condition after cleaning it all up. However, one half the the bracket is missing so we are on the hunt. You can buy them brand new on Ebay but this will be a last resort if we can't find the missing half.

MGB Brake Drum Rebuild
Our MGB drums were corroded so a new set was ordered. A replacement brake rebuild kit was also ordered. New hubs and studs were also ordered so we can be sure of the best wheel fit. All parts that have been removed will be sold on. The backplates are no longer available new so you need to find a good pair of second hand ones and refurbish them. The pictures blow show the new items and suppliers. The hubs and studs have come from MGOC spares. The paint is a heat resistant aluminium paint that is fuel and brake fluid resistant.
MGB Backplate Clean up
The brake back plates were cleaned up using a wire rotary brush on a drill and a metal file. They were smoothed out with fine Emery Paper. Once smooth they were give 2 coats of grey primer then 3 coats of brake calliper paint. This paint resists brake fluid. Pictures below show the cleaned backplates and them being painted. You can not buy new MGB backplates (at time of writing) so you have to refurbish the ones you have.
Brake backplates and component fitting to axel
Pictures below show the plates attached to the axel and being fitted with the braking components. All of the bolts and stub axels were from the donor axel. I cleaned them up using wire brushes and polished before refitting to make sure all the splines were in good order and free from any cracks, dents or misshapen in any way.
Rear Axel brake commentator fitting
A fairly simple task. The compensator was cleaned up and restored. Some parts were sourced of Ebay as we only had one half of it on the axel.
