Ac Ace Carburettors
The carburettors used in the AC Ace were Triple SU (Skinners Union) with Smiths air filters. - The carburettors from our AC 2.0Litre are SU 11/8in whereas the AC Ace had 11/4in - The slightly larger carb gave better breathing at higher revs. The maximum the 2.0litre engine can mange is 11/2in SU carburettors but only if revs of over 5500 are expected. We are sticking with SU 11/4in carbs as we feel they will be adequate for our car.
The first pump sits just after the fuel filter from the tank. This then feeds a second fuel filter. This then feeds a second fuel pump and second pump then feeds the first carburettor. There is a great diagram of this installation in the book by Leo Archibald 'AC Two-Litre Saloons & Buckland Sports Cars'. It is available from Amazon.

AC Ace Smith's Air Filters
These are very hard to find secondhand so if you have them, keep hold of them. Replacement stickers are available. I am trying to find a gauze to replace the gauze that is in there. I am not quite sure either what the metal filling is in the filter? Looks like solidified horse hair but I am guessing a metal fibre of some sort?
Smiths Air Filter Restoration
The red tub on the right has a degreasing in it for cleaning the air filters. The white tray on the left is an oil soak for the filters before they go back together. You really need to keep hold of your smiths filters as you can not buy them new. They have a unique cut away that the retaining bracket matches. Keep everything!!!
AC ACE SU Carb Manifold issue
You can see how corroded the manifolds are where the carb seats. This corrosion means you would never get a good seal. So we went on the hunt for some others. Not an easy part to find and the centre one is different to the left and right manifolds. Part numbers are D368E - Outer X2, D387E - X1 Centre One, CMA (Stamped on all of them). Tim Isles came to the rescue - again:-) and had the replacements in the post in a few days - they have gone to Burlen SU for restoration and to be refitted to the carbs.

The rebuilt carburettors from Burlen SU
The 3 pictures below were taken by Burlen when the carbs were still on the bench abut to be packed up and sent back to us.
Below you can see the retired carbs all ready to be refitted. The high standard of work by Burlen is so with the money. I have used them on several vehicles and every time the results are excellent. Worth the extra in terms of the money and time it takes.

Refitting the restored air filters to the restore SU carbs
When I had finished restoring the air filters I wrapped them in bubble wrap. As the filter has oil in it on the wire filter inside, the bubble wrap left marks all over the paint on the air filters. So I have to strip them and paint them again. A warning to us all:-)
